COVID-19 Youth Ambassador Program
June - July 2023
Program Renewed June - July 2024
The POWER Youth program, previously known as Opportunity NOW, provides career exploration and work experience activities for high school youth called Interns. Sponsored by the Nashville Mayor’s office, the summer experience continues to inspire and raise awareness around the field of STEM. The participants represent area schools across Davidson County. The name POWER Youth was selected by the peer youth leaders based on how they view themselves and their future. POWER Youth Interns at Meharry Medical College and in partnership with the HBCU Wellness Project, will explore a variety of health careers through discussions with Meharry faculty, staff, and students and hands-on activities.
During the 6-week summer program, POWER Youth Interns will complete a disease-focused public health project encompassing topics impacting global health and receive baseline didactics on various medical, dental, research and public health disciplines. Interns will receive information and education from Meharry medical or dental students, physicians, researchers and administrators on their personal journeys and preparation for college and postgraduate opportunities. They will also receive guidance and content related to academic success skills. Interns will also participate in professionalism workshops with Meharry's HR department, develop a personal portfolio and create vision boards to inspire and motivate them on their desired goals.
